Nearly one year after a suspicious fire claimed the life of an Augusta county man, the case remains unsolved. But the state police investigation takes a new turn, focusing now on possible forgery before the flames.
The man trapped in last September’s fire may have been a victim for several months leading up to his death. According to a search warrant filed in Staunton, state police want SunTrust Bank records in an investigation of a possible embezzlement and forgery. Court records say the alleged victim was 71-year-old Carter Lee Gore and the suspect was his home health care provider.

Fire destroys Rucker house
Fire destroyed the home of Larry Rucker on New Hope Church Road Sunday night, according to reports from emergency responders.
The fire started around 10:30 p.m. in the small, one-story frame house, which had no electricity. Fire officials said the cause might have been candles used for lighting.
Patrick Springs, Stuart, and Moorefield Store volunteer fire departments responded to the fire scene, along with the J.E.B. Stuart Rescue Squad and the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital ambulance.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters used 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames and were on the scene until around midnight.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Two fire calls on Tuesday turned out to be inaccurate; one at the end of Greasy Bend was only cloud cover that looked like smoke, and one on Wayside Road was a controlled burn, fire officials said.

DANVILLE – A fire in a Cardinal Village apartment Thursday morning forced a mother to drop her 6-month-old twin babies out of a second-story window before she jumped herself.
The babies were safely caught by a contractor working on the apartment, but their mother was transported to Danville Regional Medical Center with a possible broken leg, according to Danville Assistant Fire Chief R.K. Harvey.
Rosa Farmer, who was sitting with her 80-year-old mother next door, said the woman was sitting in the window after dropping her
babies out, but the fire behind her forced her to jump.
“The lady jumped out of the window, and a big burst of flame followed right behind her. She fell on the cement,” said Farmer’s mother, Rosa Lee Graham.
