The Swoope Volunteer Fire Department has a new state of the art fire truck they will be using to battle blazes.
The truck, which they purchased from a fire company in Delaware, is replacing an older model from the 1970s.
The new truck features all sorts of new equipment including an infrared camera to see through walls, special hoses that can be brought inside a home during a blaze, and even extra seats to carry more firefighters.

On its second try of the week, new emergency warning sirens at the College of William and Mary successfully sounded Wednesday morning.
The $200,000 system, installed as part of security improvements in response to the Virginia Tech mass shooting in April, didn’t work during its first test Monday due to wiring problems.

Virginia Commonwealth University officials are pleased overall with testing of emergency warning sirens on both campuses in Richmond.
The sirens were tested Wednesday at noon. They’re part of security measures that were put in place after the mass shootings at Virginia Tech in April.
VCU spokeswoman Pam Lepley said school officials got numerous reports that the 130-decibel sirens were not loud enough. She says school officials are looking at how to make them louder. One possibility would be adding more sirens.

An elderly Mechanicsville couple owes their lives to their pet of 15 years, said Joe and Margaret Ring last week.
While they slept soundly in their home in the 9400 block of Cool Spring Road on the night of September 1, a fire broke out about 1 a.m. in the home where they have lived the past 43 years.
It might have been the last night for both, if not for Shadow, their black Labrador retriever, who sounded the alarm.

It’s not unusual to see little Bobby Visco dressed as a firefighter or police officer on a regular basis. The first grader at Kersey Creek Elementary School has a passion for public service officers even at his young age and wants to emulate them when he leaves his family’s Hanover home.
This past Labor Day, Visco continued his three year tradition of helping raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Fill the Boot campaign. The 6-year-old, going door to door filling his own firefighter boot, raised $365 in just two weeks.
The national campaign raises money to support the research of the MDA.

Chesterfield’s police officers and firefighters risk their lives doing jobs to protect county residents.
But when it comes to the way they are paid overtime in certain situations, an official with the local firefighters’ union says his members get shortchanged.
“It’s an issue of parity not being maintained,” said county fire Lt. Pete Svoboda, president of the Chesterfield Professional Firefighters Association, Local 2803.
Tricky Rescues

Rescue missions, like the one in Madison County, pose many challenges for rescue teams, because of the vast, wooded areas, and mountainous terrain.
When normal sized vehicles can’t be used, they have to search by foot, or rely on other means to find people lost in the area.
T.J. Robertson, a medic with the Staunton Fire Department says all-terrain vehicles are often the best bet.

FEMA Approves $3M for Henrico
Henrico Citizen Staff Reports 27.AUG.07
UPDATED: AUG. 27, 5 P.M. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that it had approved more than $3 million in reimbursement funds for Henrico County. The money comes in response to the county’s emergency efforts to clean debris following the damage caused by Hurricane Isabel on Sept. 18, 2003.
Henrico spent a total of $4.23 million to clean debris in the storm’s aftermath, then applied to FEMA for reimbursement. The Commonwealth or local applicants will provide non-federal funds to pay the remaining 25 percent, according to FEMA officials.
“This grant is a clear indication of FEMA’s commitment to eliminating threats to lives, public health and safety,” said Jonathan Sarubbi, Regional Administrator for FEMA Region III.

Nelson County residents were left without a direct link to emergency services for nearly two hours Thursday evening after a glitch shut down the county’s 911 system.
“We had a bit of a catastrophe,” said Emergency Services Director Ray Uttaro by telephone Friday morning. “I think it was one of those worst-case scenarios.”
A brief power outage at 7:30 p.m. knocked out both the 911 center’s temporary power backup and the emergency generator intended to run the facility during longterm blackouts. Officials remain stumped over why both backups failed.

DINWIDDIE – Early Saturday afternoon, a fire completely engulfed a home at 7116 Boydton Plank Road.

The home’s yellowish siding twisted and dripped from the building as the fire hissed, popped and crackled. Large orange flames and thick clouds of smoke reached into the sky, slowing traffic and at times blotting out the sun.
Members of the Namozine Volunteer Fire and EMS periodically had to hose down one of their fire trucks due to the intense heat.
Within 45 minutes, the home was reduced to a few charred wall studs that refused to fall.
This fire was no act of arson or a horrible accident. It was the culmination of live fire training for Namozine firefighters.
