Burning Love
The brotherhood gets a Richmond bar like no other.
by Deveron Timberlake
Imagine a bar that’s more like a burnt-out shell of a room, with fire helmets for lampshades and a vintage Seagrave fire truck cut in half to make the bar. Beer taps come out of the truck’s pump panels. Red lights flash and sirens wail. And if you know what a Halligan bar is, you’re an instant part of the gang. (It’s a tool on a fire truck.) This isn’t somebody’s pipe dream — it’s the coming together of a long-held mission, and Shawn Gregory, a 17-year veteran of the Henrico Fire Department, is driving that dream straight into the tiny café that used to be the Kitchen Table, at 3 N. 17th St. in Shockoe Bottom.

NORFOLK
Fire investigators have determined that two recent fires were arson.
One struck Sunday in the 2800 block of DeBree Ave. in a vacant building that was being renovated.
And early Thursday, a blaze broke out in a second-floor apartment in the 300 block of W. 29th St. The apartment was furnished but was not occupied, the fire department said.
“We believe that there could be a connection but we don’t know that yet,” said Battalion Chief Bruce Evans, a spokesman for Norfolk Fire-Rescue.
Nobody was injured in either fire.

A year’s worth of effort culminated in a safety seminar and equipment demonstrations at Deep Run Hunt Club Saturday morning.
Over 100 residents turned out to hear two hours of tips by Paquette, Newton, her husband and veterinarian Tom Newton, Goochland Fire Chief Ken Brown, and Deputy Chief Eddie Ferguson.

Low water complicates firefighting
By Sean Muserallo, NBC12 News
Declining water supplies are affecting how well some area firefighters are able to protect people’s homes. A dry, windy day like Friday can be the perfect combination for disaster.
If that happened Friday, Hanover fire officials aren’t so sure they would have enough water to put it out.
Some people in the area don’t rely on fire hydrants. They rely on ponds, streams and lakes, so when there is a fire, how quickly it’s put out depends on how fast firefighters can get water sources to the scene.

Judge refuses to dismiss Culpeper rescue squad’s appeal of suspension
Date published: 10/10/2007
BY DONNIE JOHNSTON
Culpeper County Circuit Judge John Cullen yesterday refused to dismiss–at least for the time being–the Culpeper County Rescue Squad’s appeal of its suspension by the state.
The appeal would force the Office of Emergency Medical Services to hold a formal hearing to determine if state Health Commissioner Dr. Robert B. Stroube erred in first pulling the squad’s license to run calls Jan. 3 and then changing the order to a suspension in late May.
The state argues that it had every right to suspend the squad, also known as Company 11, for not answering calls in what it determined to be a timely manner.

WASHINGTON — Toby Halliday had many questions, but this was one of the biggest: Why do firetrucks often arrive before ambulances to medical emergencies in the District?
In the case of his father-in-law, retired New York Times reporter David E. Rosenbaum, the firefighters who responded to the January 2006 call about a man down failed to complete a basic exam and seemed eager to hand off the vomiting patient to ambulance workers when they showed up minutes later. So began a downward spiral of failure and seeming indifference throughout the department that ended with Rosenbaum’s death two days later.

Young Burn Survivors Get Royal Treatment in Local Area
by KRISTEN ARMSTRONG, Staff Writer
The 43 teenagers who congregated at Fort Myer’s firehouse on Sept. 26 were each from a different part of the country, and had different upbringings and interests.
But they all share one thing in common – they all are burn survivors.
For 12 years, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) has selected young burn survivors (ages 13 to 15) to participate in the National Children’s Burn Camp, which brings them to the local area for a week-long tour of the nation’s capital and surrounding areas, including a visit to Fort Myer.
